››June 24, 2009 - Another Version of Being - En Français!
So we've had this version of Being for over a year and yeah, we are finally getting around to releasing it. Maybe we were just deciding how to do it and like many things with a band, stuff gets shelved, forgotten and finally....rediscovered. So, without further delay, here is a French version of one of the most popular songs off our last release - abosolutely FREE. The song is Being (Version Français), featuring our very good friend Arianne Jean on the vocal tip. Enjoy!
››June 1, 2009 - Being remixed & released on Balanced Records
Our friend Solidaze from Balanced Records was kind enough to bang out a fabulous remix of 'Being' from our last record. The track was recently released on the same label on a compilation record called Traffic. Peep this sick little gem they arranged for us - available from iTunes and Emusi!
Moses Mayes will be making an appearence for a great cause at the MTS Centre on May 13, 2009. Rise Again 2009 aims to help those in need from Manitoba's devastating floods and we couldn't be more happier to help by performing at this great concert. Broadcast live on APTN Television and CBC Radio, Moses will hit the stage with Tom Cochrane, Tom Jackson, Nathan, JD Fortune and many more! Tickets are only $20 and can be purchased at ticketmaster.ca or at the gates the night of the concert.
Well, what started out as the ashes of one band, who gathered to play a paid gig at small long lost Jamaican bar in Winnipeg, has found us on an amazing path 10 years later. So, why not celebrate with out fav friends in Winnipeg. 10 Years people!!!! An amazing time for the Moses Mayes crew. We hope to see you all on the dance floor, we miss the hell out of you!

›› Nov 12, 2008 -Another good time
Once again, Western Canada showed us love....lots of it.
In a two week and three day stint, we played 15 shows with one day off tucked in the middle somewhere. From Saskatoon to Nelson, where we finished it off, you all packed those dance floors till the wee hours getting it on to our music. We just want to thank you all for such an amazing experience.
t was certainly great to be back on stage every night - every night the hospitality of the venues and the smiles of your faces made our day. We we're exhausted most times till we hit that stage every night. Antin, our drummer, pointed out how hard it was to expel the most energy of the day at midnight every night - but also how satisfying it was to do it.
Anyway, we had a great time...period.
We now rest and start back at our daily lives back home and hit our studio to work on some new music. By the way, if you had a chance to see our new electronic act LeBeato and dug it, we finally posted a track at www.myspace.com/lebeato. Check it out.
We have some holiday shows planned - December 27 in Winnipeg at the Pyramid and NYE in Saskatoon at Lydia's.....can't wait.
See you all then....

›› June 16,2008 - First official release in the UK
Has this taken too long to happen? We think so...but after 9 years of Moses doing what we do, we have officially released our first track in the UK with indy label Soul Unsigned. It's pretty damn cool, and it's another introduction of our latest release 'Second Ring' to the fine folks across the pond.
The track 'Tell Me', featuring our friend Ariane Jean, is the lead track for Soul Unsigned's second EP release.
Check out their site here: http://www.soulunsigned.com
And reviews are already pouring in and they seem to really like our song and apparently already know who we are...ain't that wicked! You can check those out here:
So if you're one of our many UK fans, head out and pick up the EP and help support the label that is really helping spread the Moses sound! If CD's ain't your thing, then head on over to iTunes UK, Emusic, Napster or Amazon and download them digitally. Or heck, even buy it right from our store digitally and DRM free!
And as sweet as all this is, yet another track from 'Second Ring' is being released with this same label - so check back here for details on that!
›› June 5,2008 - Moses Mayes' only summer appearence
Only one show you ask? That's right! Moses makes thier one and only appearance this summer at Jazz Winnipeg on Sunday June 29th at Old Market Square. It's safe to say that this is Moses' gig, it's the 7th year they've done it and well, the audience grows more and more every year. To top if off, some of the band members are performing with other groups that night like Jesse Havey & the Quirks and Jonny Moonbeam! Yeah...it's our night ;-)
But don't fret, we'll be back on tour this fall across Canada. We miss you all, honestly. We needed a summer at home for once (first time in 5 years we are home!) and the fathers of the Moses collective have been creating a new project, fantastically named LeBeato. It debuts this Friday at the New Academy for our monthly Diggin' seires - you should come and see them play if you like electro-rocky-heavey-beat-turntable-dance music...does that make sense?
Anyway, our 'Being' remix's will be coming out sometime this summer after much delay. So sorry about that....stay tuned.
Thanks for sticking with us! We're 9 years old this year!
›› April 3,2008 - Moses Mayes presents: Diggin'
That's right kids! Canada's fav funk fusion act is presenting a monthly residency at the New Academy in Osborne Village!
Diggin' will showcase and expose you to the best in Funk, fusion, electro and dance once a month with guest DJ's and bands. As Moses is sitting round writing new music and taking a break from the tour circuit, why not keep the funk alive with your professors of the genre exposing you to it!
Our first night happens Friday May 2 and features Saskatoon's master of vinyl digging the Gaff along side our very own DJ RPG! We have a special mystery guest band playing too - you're gonna have to come out to find out who it is...
›› March 17,2008 - Where are you?? What's going on?? When are you playing again??
Ok, that was even longer then the last time...having no news that is. Well that's not completely the truth, we are constantly on Facebook uploading photos and video's causing us to neglect our lovely webpage!
So, the latest are some video's we have been digging up and posting round the internet and we also have two summer shows that have been announced (check the tour section on the left).
As for the videos, we just posted some footage on Youtube from the Montreal Jazz Festival last summer and if you're a Facebooker, then head on over to our group, band page or profile page (wow that's allot of pages) and check out the 20min montage of a bunch of different performances from last summer.
So, here is some of that footage, enjoy! We'll be back with more news soon!
›› Jan 27, 2008 - Long time no talk - we're in our studio right now...
Hey all, it's been a while, thought we'd update to you on the band.
After some terrific holiday shows here at home, we've taken a little break...it's been nice. We just bought ourselves some new studio gear and have been frantically learning to use all the new gizmo's and setting up all our dormant gear that'd been in hiding during the last 3 years of touring. So, we are currently jamming with the band, writing new songs, writing a new live set (which we will premier some time in the near future) and lastly, we've been working with our friends at Balanced Records on some remix's of our song 'Being' featuring Ariane Jean. Sit tight, we will be making some announcements about the release date and where you can buy all the different remix's.
And yeah...that's about it for now! We plan on doing some more shows this spring if you're wondering when we'll be back out live. Keep checking all the usual Internet spots for show info.

›› Nov 22, 2007 - Moses featured on CMJ Magazine Mix CD
Some pretty cool news on the front - the song 'Tell Me' from our latest release 'Second Ring' will be featured in the December CMJ Mix CD that comes with their Monthly magazine! CMJ is the College Radio music authority in the USA and it's quite and honor to be selected. Check out CMJ at www.cmj.com
It's a crazy huge thing for Moses, we were hand picked by the CMJ staff from our success at the very kewl www.ourstage.com
Keep it rolling down South folks, we are trying are best to eventually spread the Moses live show down there, it's not an easy feat for those in the know on how this music biz works.
Anyway, thought we'd all let you know the good news...
›› Nov 15, 2007 - Back home safe & sound
Once again Western Canada you showed Moses the love! What a great tour people - from Brandon, MB to Tofino, BC people moved and made many cold clubs into a sweaty hot humid room. We also made some great friends with our touring compadres Girl Nobody- what a lovely sound people, make sure to check them out.
Obviously there were some highlights as usual and we'd like to point out some of those: Saskatoon, you guys made Lydia's Pub a sardine can, MooseJaw for hosting the WCMA's where Moses took home the hardware, Vancouver who packed the Media Club for an all out musical experience with our friends the Hermit & Girl Nobody, Tofino for giving us some amazing Halloween costumes (the He-Man guy was the best!), Edmonton for finally embracing us and coming to see us play and finally our friends in Banff who solidified our place as their chosen funkfusiondance act - you guys made that huge bar feel small! Honestly, that was one huge dance floor! But in reality, all the shows were right on....without a doubt.
We're back home now soaking in the year that was 2007 - an what an amazing year for Moses. We're heading back to our home studio now to write and record new material - we're looking forward to that. We've been on the road now for 3 years off and on and we're all pumped to get back to writing. But no worries, we're not done yet! We have a new single to launch off our 'Second Ring' record - more details will be announced soon on that. We also have a couple more shows to play close to home, those will be announced soon.
Other then that, enjoy the snow (ahahah) and you'll be hearing from us real soon...
›› Oct 22, 2007 - Moses
won the award
So how do you start off tour off on the good foot? Play two packed shows in your favorite Canadian Prairie cities and then head to Moose Jaw, SK and win a WCMA for Outstanding Instrumental album! That's right nation, Moses took home the hardware last night and celebrated in style. The best part though were the two shows to kick off the western swing - Brandon, you guys packed that dance floor and Saskatoon, it was cold outside but the bar...sweaty...very sweaty.
Thank everyone for giving us some energy on the first weekend here on the road - we're now zipping across the Prairies to meet up with our next tour drummer in Canmore. We also want to mention that Winnipeg's other Mayes, Romi Mayes, won two awards last night! The Mayes' and fellow Manitobans stole the show last night...makes ya feel kikda warm and cozy inside.
The rest of the West, here we come!
›› Sept 14, 2007 - Moses

›› April 30, 2007 - Tour, tour,
tour
Hey Kids! Sorry for the month
off-of-nothing-on-our-page here, we've been all
over the place with other projects and gigs. The
great thing is our summer tour is being posted
up here and we gotta admit we can't wait to hit
the Jazz Festivals across Canada as well as some
great clubs we love to play. Most of the Western
shows are posted, a few more are coming but
mostly all the Ontario and Quebec dates are
still coming in. Sit tight, you'll see all those
dates posted in the 'On Tour' section here on
the website.
So, now we are rehearsing and getting ready to kick it with all of you!
Over the past months, most of the band has recording and producing Maiko
Watson's record which sounds absolutely stunning. Maiko has a great old
school R&B feel and the band sounds great backing her up - look for that
release sometime down the road.
So until next time, keep looking for an official tour announcement and
if you have a gig that you think we'd love to be at, don't hesitate to
give us a shout...and if you want to be really update-to-date, sign up
for the newsletter up on the top right hand side of the page under 'Mail
List'.
Cheers folks!
›› March 27, 2007 - Summertime
is a coming
Thanks to all that came out to the Big Throw
Down, we had a great time and the dance floor
was packed as usual...Winnipeg, you rock!
So as summertime approaches our summer tour dates are rolling in
including many festival & club dates. We're super stoked to announce
that we will be opening for Herbie Hancock at the SaskJazz!!!!!!!
Mr.Hancock is the reason this band exists, and now we can mark JB and
Herbie Hancock on the list of peeps we've shared the stage with. Damn!
Can't wait for this summer.
More dates will be posted, until then we're laying low and writing and
recording more music for your ears. If you haven't already, make sure to
check out our new album 'Second Ring' that's still charting on the
campus charts like mad.
We're also really happy to tell you that Moses Mayes' music will be
featured in the inspiring documentary 'Make Goals Not War' (www.makegoalsnotwar.com).
This great film by our Hamilton, ON based friend Maty Campeonisimo is a
great idea that asks world leaders to consider soccer (or football)
matches to decide disputes instead of war! It's a great idea and the
first cut we saw was truly an entertaining and educational ride. Make
sure to check it out!
Thanks for checkin' in and see you all this summer....

›› Jan 2, 2007 - Thanks for a
terrific 2006 people!
So that's it, 2006 is done! It was a fantastic year for us
- several tours across Canada and some parts of the USA, two
releases including our new full length 'Second Ring',
our new record hitting no.1 on several stations across Canada, some great
reviews in the UK and here at home and overall a good time at each and every
show we played!
Big thanks to both Winnipeg and Saskatoon
for ending the year off in style with shows on the New Years
weekend. Saskatoon, you guys packed that club and danced
right till the end - we very much appreciate your attendance
and enthusiasm that night. There's obviously so many people
to thank for our success's in 2006 and we know you know who
you are and how you held us high throughout the year.
Much more to come in 2007 - keep checking back here at
the site for more tour announcements this year. We can't
wait to get back on the road and play for you guys each and
every night. Make sure you check out and pick up our new
record Second Ring! You can get it right here at the
Moses Store, download it
through various sites like
iTunes, Napster and eMusic, or head down to your local
music store and pick up the CD! We also have some sweet new
t-shirts coming out soon - stay tuned for that.
Again, much love from the Moses Mayes Collective and we
look forward to doing it again in 2007!

for Second Ring
Underground Soul
››
www.underground-soul.com
If you like you’re funk wearing a pair of bright blue Adidas
Gazelle’s, an oversized hat and with a stylish middle class
IT girl on its arm then this is right on your guest list.
Canada has reared a funky house/dance combo called Moses
Mayes. The band, a 7 piece outfit from Winnipeg, confesses
to being influenced by Jamiroquai and it shows. In fact
unashamedly there are a lot of your favourite Acid Jazz
groups in the mix but what Moses Mayes have created is a
sound unique to them with a current dance culture vibe. With
titles like “Space & Time (Elevate)”,
“Elevate” & “Being” they
could easily be in Mark De Clive Lowe or Naked Music’s
circle of friends.
“2nd Ring” (their third album) starts with my personal
favourite on the set the excellent “Intrafusion”,
the guitar on the intro twangs like The Commodores “Machine
Gun” before sliding into some Bob James style keys.
“Tell Me” is how Jamiroquai would sound if old
cheekbones herself Sophie Ellis Bextor was fronting them.
“Full Moon” is classic Brand New Heavies
with an old school ghetto blaster rap over the top.
“Cause I Just Hav’ Ta” is another favourite,
recalling again the Heavies, Repercussions or Groove
Collective. As the album progresses were treated to slick
dance jams based on a fusion of funk, jazz funk and chill
out. Each band member shines when given chance to solo; I’d
love to hear Moses Mayes the live experience. Also worthy of
mention is the dreamy “Waking World”, wah
wah grooved title track and melodic Rhodes led
“Elevate”.
Until now I thought the best things to come out of Canada
were Mike Myers, Joni Mitchell & Due South (didn’t you just
love that show? Like a mix between Star Trek’s Mr. Spock and
‘The Littlest Hobo’). I'm pleased to add a unique funk band
playing music for the beautiful people to the list. Now I
have to go find their last two sets before I see them live.
I suggest you do the same… PS I left Bryan Adams & Greg
Rusedski off the list on purpose ;) 4/5

Second Ring is a happy hybrid of Big-band jazz, mellow
soul, and understated Hip-hop with plenty of funk added to
the mix. The journey passes through the soulful voice of
Ariane Jean in ‘Tell me’ and onto gentle Piano and strings
backed up by Sax, trombone, trumpets and a funky drum line
in ‘Cause I Just Hav’ta’.
Moses Mayes appear to be big fans of the synth and electric
organ, and perhaps get a little enthusiastic at some points,
tracks like ‘Full Moon’ miscalculate the measurements (and
some pretty cheesy rap doesn’t help) but the jazz vibe laid
down at the start sets the tone for mellow lounging and
chilled hip-hop in tracks like ‘Cause I Just Hav’ta’ and
‘Being’ bring out the Alice Russell/Zero 7 brand of mellow
in this album. LH

CIUT-FM Toronto!
Moses Mayes stopped by CIUT-FM at the University of Toronto for
a four song studio performance and interview. The studio
session will be aired Thursday Nov 30 from 8-10am on CIUT's long
standing morning show Take 5. Make sure to
tune in to hear some of the bands new material...
Moses Mayes are a seven piece self contained band hailing from
Western Canada. Their music has been variously described as a cross
between Jamiroquai and Prince with a garnish of Herbie Hancock.
Well, I can see where the allusions are coming from. There’s a
definite Jay Kay feel in there. Even the track titles (“Space and
Time” and “Elevate” for instance) could have walked of a Jamiroquai
set.
Then,
in places the bass-heavy electro funk could have been lifted off
Prince’s palette, while the set’s liberally laced with keyboard
fills that do remind me of Herbie H. Yet the album’s overall sound
is unique. It’s not a copy of anything, nor is it a pastiche.
Take
the beguiling cut “Tell Me”. It has the three elements I’ve just
discussed, but the spacey vocal could’ve come from Naked session
while the muted horn hints at Donald Byrd. On “Full Moon” the
vocal’s much funkier and leads into a some urgent hip-hop rhyming.
“Cause I Just Hav’ta” and “Second Ring” are classic acid-jazz
workouts, while “Being” is a light tune with heavy lyrics and a boss
nova undertow. It’s different to anything else on the set and
different to anything people like Jamiroquai or Prince have ever
attempted. In essence that’s the secret of the Moses Mayes sound.
Sure, they’ve listened to all kinds of music and been influenced by
all kinds of people… who hasn’t? But what they’ve gone on to do is
to take the ingredients and deliver something new and unique - their
very own sound
- which I urge you investigate. (RATING 4) (B.B)
Montreal Gazette - November 11, 2006
It's a fine line
between funk and fromage. The acid jazz era is long gone, and excursions
into fusion grooves are precarious undertakings. Moses Mayes rides the line
without making any major faux pas, but without offering much innovations. At
it's worst, this disc revisits territory the Brand New Heavies explored a
decade back; at it's best, it dips into Jamiroquai-ish soulful dance and
minimal house. A pleasant enough listen. 3/5

Moses Mayes – Montreal Mirror November 16, 2006 Second Ring (Dublum/Fusion III)
The dancefloor-ready grooves of funk/electro/house band Moses Mayes
easily evoke shades of Jamiroquai and Zero 7, complete with all the
musical chops needed to pull off such a comparison. They straddle the
fence with 12-inch cuts like the lovely “Being” and the upbeat shuffle
of “Tell Me,” both featuring the subtle vocals of Ariane Jean, while
instrumental tracks like “Remind” and “Waking World” point to the tight
musical talent making up this band. My only qualm is the problematic
“Full Moon,” which has everything you need to make a corny funk salad,
meaning excitable vocals, unnecessary rapping, a scratch solo, and lines
like, “We gonna funk for you.” Nice bassline, though. 8/10 (Scott
